Components for machinery and plant often combine several characteristics that push conventional protective packaging to its limits: they are heavy, have complex geometries and are at the same time sensitive to scratches or vibration – shafts, housings, valve blocks, tools or assemblies with sensors, for example. Many companies therefore resort to their own constructions made of wood, cut-to-size inserts and film. The goods arrive – but the time spent per shipment is uneconomical and the quality depends on whoever is doing the packing.

What does mechanical engineering demand of protective packaging?

  • High weight on a small footprint Point loads from shafts, flanges or castings push straight through standard cushioning. What is needed is cushioning that takes up and distributes the weight with a perfect fit.
  • Complex geometries and one-offs Hardly any two parts are alike. Off-the-shelf packaging does not fit – and improvising costs time. What is needed is a system that adapts to any shape, without tooling and without cutting to size.
  • Machined and coated surfaces Ground, polished or coated surfaces must not pick up scratches or pressure marks; friction inside the box is the most common cause of damage.
  • Spare-parts shipping under time pressure When a plant is down, the spare part has to go out immediately – packed safely by whoever happens to be at the packing station.
  • Traceable quality Customers in plant engineering expect documented processes. Packaging should be reproducible, not dependent on the packer's form on the day.
